EXPERTISE

Three Integrated Areas

Area 1

Field studies

We specialize in conducting detailed environmental studies and sampling. We possess expertise in designing ecological surveys that capture extensive biodiversity and physicochemical information. We can collect in situ data on microclimate, atmospheric composition, and soil / water to atmosphere fluxes for a wide range of gases, offering vital insights into the interaction between ecosystems, physicochemistry, and the atmosphere.

Area 2

Bioinformatics

We specialize in DNA and RNA sequence based genomic data analysis from environmental samples including soils and biofilms. Our expertise spans the analysis of amplicons, metagenomes, and metatranscriptomes. We utilize high performance computing to interpret complex biological data using the latest taxonomic and functional databases, and open source bioinformatic tools. We apply these techniques to explore the taxonomic diversity and functionality of various microbial processes, integrating statistical models to providing deep insights into the structure and function of ecosystems.

Area 3

Ultra-Sensitive

Gas Chromatography

Our group leads the ultra-sensitive gas chromatography platform at La Trobe, equipped with the state-of-the-art Model 6000 Trace Gas Analyzer (VALCO Instruments Company Inc.) for detecting impurities in Air/N2.  We have expertise in the design of microcosm studies for soils, organic matter, biofilms and pure culture to track the uptake or production various analytes over a wide range of concentrations.

Area 4

Radio & Stable

Isotopes

Our laboratory specializes in isotope analysis and employs radioisotopes like 14C to investigate microbial carbon fixation. We are in the process of scaling up our stable isotope probing (SIP) techniques. This enhanced capability enables us to map the flow of elements within ecosystems, offering more profound understanding of biogeochemical cycles, nutrient dynamics, and the functions of various microorganisms within these systems.
